The woman who struck and killed a 12-year-old boy on the East Hill this past spring faces a heavy fine and driver’s licence suspension.

In Athabasca Provincial Dec. 10, Crystal Andres pleaded guilty to the March 17 careless driving incident that resulted in the death of 12-year-old Lee Thunder.

Judge Clifton G. Purvis fined Andres $2,300 and suspended her driver’s licence for 60 days. Judge Purvis said during the sentencing that the fine fits the actions that she was responsible for.

Court heard that on March 17 at around 8 p.m., Andres was driving up the East Hill — Highway 55 — when she accidentally struck Thunder with her car. At the time of the incident, Andres said she thought she had hit a deer and continued travelling up the hill. Thunder was taken to the hospital where he later passed away.

After hearing about this, Andres went to the RCMP to report what happened and was fully cooperative with their investigation.

Court heard that the RCMP investigation revealed that drugs, alcohol and speeding were not factors in the incident.
