A 12-year-old male succumbed to his injuries Tuesday evening after being struck by a vehicle on the east hill.

Shortly before 8:30 p.m. Mar. 17, emergency medical personnel and Athabasca RCMP as well as the Athabasca Fire Department responded to a report of a hit and run on Highway 55 - more specifically on what is referred to as the “east hill ” in Athabasca.

A vehicle, which police believe was a 2006 Ford Freestar, was eastbound and hit the male with impact sending the victim into the south ditch. The vehicle then left the scene.

The victim was transported to the Athabasca Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving.

At around 11 p.m., a 36-year-old female from Athabasca turned herself in to the RCMP and suspect vehicle was recovered a short time later.

Traffic in both directions was diverted through Colinton and Highway 827 for about two hours while an RCMP collision analyst conducted an investigation.

The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending against the female.
