Yukking it up for a playground

Edmonton comedian Lars Callieou headlined Valentine's Day fundraiser
BOYLE – A serious project needs a funny fundraiser and that’s what happened Feb. 14 at the Boyle Community Centre when Lars Callieou entertained to help raise money for the Boyle School Playground Charity Fundraiser.

Callieou was the main attraction at the Valentine’s Day themed event. The hall was decked out with hearts, chocolate covered strawberries and champagne by event organizer Lacey Doman, who is a longtime friend of Callieou’s.

He’s travelled the world with names like Joan Rivers, Bob Saget and Kathleen Madigan and done over 1,000 fundraisers and corporate events but when his friend called, Callieou said he was happy to help.

“I feel lucky, really lucky and I’m delighted to come help Lacey out,” he said noting it was his first time to perform in Boyle.

For an hour Callieou deftly handled the couple of people who thought it was an interactive performance, leaving the crowd in stitches. He even tried to convince the winner of the 50/50 draw, Mark Anderson, that he wasn’t clowning around when he called Anderson from the stage to tell him he’d won over $5,000.

Doman didn’t have a tally of the event until after press time but feels it brought them to close to their goal.

“We probably need about $5,000 maybe,” she said. “We have another fundraiser on Feb. 28. Hopefully we can do it all then and will be super happy.”

Like any good organizer though Doman has a backup plan if the next event falls short.

“We will take a loan from Aspen View (School District) most likely, but hopefully we don't have to do that,” she stated.

Aspen View’s board chair and Boyle resident Candy Nikipelo was at the event with her family and enjoyed the night out.

“It was a successful evening and planned very well in support of a very good cause,” Nikipelo said. “That’s what Boyle does; when there’s a need they come together.”

The next event is live pro wrestling with Real Canadian Wrestling on Feb. 28 at the Boyle school gym at 7 p.m.

Tickets are available in Boyle at Buy-Low, AWIN Insurance, Central Sales and the Boyle school. In Athabasca you can buy them at Athabasca Automotive. It is a family friendly show and tickets are $15 advance and $20 at the door.
