Drivers heading through Athabasca today should expect to take a few more corners than usual as crews continue to fight a large structure fire at the Grand Union Hotel, located at the intersection of Highway 2 and Highway 55.

Pieces of the Grand Union Hotel are being brought down due to a fire that started after 5 a.m. on Tuesday morning

Firefighters got a call that there was a fire at the hotel at around 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning. 

 "We’ve never really ever seen something like that," said the witness.

The Town of Athabasca is advising residents their water pressure could be affected by the ongoing efforts to extinguish the fire. Athabasca County regional fire chief Travis Shalapay said crews got the call at 5:41 a.m.

Townandcountrytoday.com is on the scene of a fire at the Grand Union Hotel in downtown Athabasca this morning (6:45 am). Highway 2 between 50 Street and 49 Street is closed as firefighters battle the blaze and a portion of 49 Street is also closed.
