Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation resident killed in collision with semi

A two-vehicle collision near Glenvis took the life of a 26-year-old Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation resident.

BARRHEAD - One person from Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation has died following a two-vehicle collision near Glenevis along Highway 43 on Sunday, March 26.

According to a police media release, Mayerthorpe RCMP received a report about the collision at about 11:36 a.m. that day.

The initial investigation revealed that a vehicle crossed the centre meridian of the highway, striking the side of a semi that was heading eastbound. The collision resulted in the death of a 26-year-old man who was a passenger in the vehicle.

A 19-year-old female passenger was taken to the hospital with serious non-life-threatening injuries, while the 27-year-old driver of the vehicle was also taken to the hospital with non-disclosed injuries and was later released, the RCMP stated. The driver of the semi was uninjured. All three passengers of the smaller vehicle were Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation residents.

Members of the RCMP, including a traffic analyst, were on the scene for several hours to investigate the collision. Police have yet to determine if alcohol played a factor.
