What writer doesn’t like to make money from his talent?

When local author and poet Greg Chance Hansen sat inside the entrance to Barrhead Co-op recently for a book sale, he had plenty of dollars and cents in mind.

However, his aim wasn’t to fatten his bank account – it was to boost the coffers of the Food Bank.

His hopes were fulfilled, for people not only bought his books they also donated money.

By the end of his five-hour shift, Hansen had amassed more than $300, which he will present to Barrhead &District FCSS on Tuesday, Dec. 10. “It went really well,” said Hansen last Friday. “It was a blast. I signed books and met a lot of very nice people in Barrhead.”

Five of Hansen’s books were on sale for $5 each. Four were from his children’s Green Pea series, while the other was his compilation of short stories and poetry, The Silent Reality, which tackled subjects like abuse, physical pain and suicide to love, divorce and bullying.

2014 promises to be another creative year for the 20-year-old, who lives at a family farm in Cherhill. He is aiming to write three or four books, including a suspense/thriller series titled Under The Shield.

Some Green Pea sequels are planned, which is good news for children who have enjoyed Hanson’s readings at Barrhead Public Library.

The series started with, Green Pea, Not A Home For Me. A 28-page children’s book, with illustrations by his mother, Pascha Hansen, it is about a green pea searching for its home. With simple words and colours, it is seen as a way to encourage children to start reading.
