The Barrhead Bombers junior hockey team pulled out a 7-2 victory over the Meadow Lake Mustangs amidst two losses to the Cold Lake Hornets and Hinton Timberwolves this weekend.

On Friday, the Bombers hosted the Hornets at the Barrhead Agrena and suffered a 5-2 loss. Cold Lake jumped out to a 3-0 lead within the first three minutes of the game and then scored another insurance goal with 8:42 remaining in the first.

Barrhead finally got on the scoreboard late in the second period with a goal by Dmitro Kobylnyk, assisted by Raf Lambert Dodginghorse.

Though Barrhead were strong in the last half, Cold Lake was able to score one more goal to take a 5-1 lead. The Bombers’ Stran Backfat Redcrow was able to score a goal of his own, assisted by Wassim Saidani, to put the score at 5-2.

Notably, this was the first victory Cold Lake has achieved over Barrhead all season. They defeated the Hornets twice in their first two games of the year and then scored an 7-6 overtime victory over Cold Lake Oct. 19.

Bombers down Mustangs

Barrhead scored their fourth victory of the season Nov. 30, posting a 7-2 win over the Meadow Lake Mustangs from Saskatchewan at the Agrena.

The Bombers were up 3-0 after the first period, with two goals from Saidani and a single from Kobylnyk.

Barrhead then notched two more goals in the second period, with Serhii Poimanov and Oleksandr Davydenko finding the back of the net.

Carter Zawortny increased Barrhead’s lead to 6-0 in the third before Meadow Lake was able to fire back with a goal of their own — the teams traded goals down the stretch to make the final 7-2.

Goalie Ian Sotlar faced 24 shots on net for the win, while the Bombers fired 60 shots on the Meadow Lake goalie.

Winless versus Hinton

The Bombers have been winless against Hinton all season and Sunday’s away game proved to be no exception.

Saidani scored the only goal for the Bombers in a 6-1 loss. Trading places midway through the second period, goalies Brandon Lakusta and Sotlar faced a total of 33 shots on goal.

The Bombers are on the road this Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 7-8, heading up to Cold Lake for a pair of games. They play one more away game in Edson before returning for another home game in Barrhead oat 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14.

Notably, that will be their last action of 2019, as the team will then be off for the Christmas break.
