The Barrhead Senior Jags boys played the best game of the season when they took on the Westlock R.F. Staples T-Birds on Thursday, Feb. 27.

The two teams went head to head in a game for gold, with the Jags coming out on top with a close final score of 45-40.

“I was a little bit nervous, Westlock is very strong and we are missing two very strong players because of hockey, so I thought overall we played very well,” Jags’ Coach Colin Erickson said. “Overall I thought that was our best game of the year, I always say that we always wait until the end of the year in finals.”

Erickson said that for him a highlight of the game was seeing the team play defensively.

“I would have to say defense, my theory is defense wins games,” Erickson said.

The team may have played more on the defensive side, but they still kept themselves in check.

“Even our bigger guys, we have two huge guys that play 95 per cent of the game, and to only have two fouls each that’s pretty impressive,” Erickson said, adding he was impressed with the way even the younger players were playing the game.

“I was the most impressed with the Grade 8s that played, they played really well,” he said.

The Jags now head to Mayerthorpe next weekend to compete in zones.

“They took one team from our league to send to zones, out of eight teams in total at zones, so now we have a chance to compete for that,” Erickson said.

Barrhead has played a strong season, and continues to go undefeated.

“After this tournament I think we are 16-0. We haven’t lost a game yet,” Erickson said. “It was a good wrap up to our league,”

Erickson said that both Subway and Kal Tire were big sponsors of the playoff games, and wanted to thank them for their contributions.
