Barrhead RCMP a little busier than usual over long weekend

Investigation into three-vehicle collision on Sept. 1 still ongoing
Sept. 1 Accident File (VM)
This smashed-up car was one of three vehicles involved in a Sept. 1 accident along Highway 18 at Range Road 40 near Barrhead. Police are still investigating the incident, which shut down traffic along the highway for several hours, and have yet to lay any charges.

BARRHEAD – The number of complaints over the Labour Day long weekend was up slightly but it was otherwise a “fairly tame weekend,” according to Sgt. Bob Dodds of the Barrhead RCMP.

From Sept. 2 to the morning of Sept. 6, Dodds said the Barrhead detachment received a total of 43 complaints, “which is a little bit above average.”

The complaints included three reports of stolen vehicles and some assaults but nothing earth-shattering, he noted.

“I’m going to say it was a little busier than the average weekend,” Dodds said.

Provincially, the Alberta RCMP issued a total of 2,302 tickets over the long weekend, as stated in a news release.

A total of 1,058 individuals were ticketed for speeding, 74 individuals received fines for distracted driving, and 85 impaired motorists were removed from the roads.

Additionally, the RCMP responded to a number of motor vehicle collisions, which resulted in four fatalities.

Sept. 1 collision

The investigation is continuing into a three-vehicle collision near Barrhead on Sept. 1 that resulted in multiple injuries.

Emergency personnel responded to the accident along Highway 18 at Range Road 40 around 3 p.m. They ultimately had to shut down the highway for several hours to allow for an investigation and for STARS Air Ambulance to transport one of the injured individuals, a woman from Onoway, to Edmonton.

Dodds said they had a collision reconstructionist attend the scene and also gathered some evidence from one of the vehicles and the hospital. Now they’re awaiting the results of an analysis of that evidence.

“Once that’s completed, we’ll determine what charges, if any, are appropriate,” he said. “It’s a complicated investigation, so it could take a while.”
