The Barrhead RCMP has welcomed another member to their detachment, Const. Nick Crowther.

Growing up watching family members work for the RCMP just helped build his dream to one day join the force.

“I have a first cousin, and two other cousins that are in (the force),” Crowther said.

It was a cousin living in P.E.I that played such a meaningful role in Crowther’s decision of becoming an RCMP officer.

“My first cousin, he is a Staff Sergeant so he is quite a few years ahead, so he was the idol growing up I guess, or the role model,” Crowther said.

Living in a small community outside of Halifax helped grow his passion for small town living, and after beginning his career working as an RCMP officer in Two Hills, Alta., he knew small towns were the right fit.

“I would much rather be in a small town than any city,” Crowther said. “I like the people, I like the communities, and I’m a small town person.”

Crowther grew up in Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia, and moved to Alberta after receiving a post in Two Hills where he worked as a officer for just under six years.

“You spend your time in a post, and then you will be approached by staffing and they say, well here are your options,” Crowther explained.

Officers receive a list of locations that are looking for officers, and Barrhead was one of the options Crowther received.

“I came here, I drove around, it looked like a nice little town and so I said yeah, sure,” Crowther said.

Settling into Barrhead has not been difficult.

“I have great neighbours, and everyone’s been very friendly,” Crowther said, adding he also shares a passion for local popular outdoor activities.

“It’s a sledding and quading community, and that is all stuff that I am into,” Crowther said.

So far, Crowther finds the Barrhead detachment to be a good fit.

“I think this detachment is awesome, there are good members, they work hard, and there is a great variety of people there that compliment each other, and it’s a fun atmosphere to work in,” Crowther said. “We have great leadership, and the support staff is awesome.”

Natalie Tung is Crowther’s partner, and because of the common letter in their first names, they have taken on a nickname.

“Nick and Natalie, the N team,” Crowther said with a laugh.

Working for the RCMP is a honourable profession, one that Crowther takes pride in.

“I love the traditions, the pride Canadians have for the RCMP,” Crowther said when asked why he enjoyed being an officer.

“I look forward to working in, and with the community, and growing friendships and partnerships while maintaining our laws,” Crowther said.
