BARRHEAD - The Barrhead Composite High School (BCHS) Jaguars boys basketball team took the gold medal after going undefeated at a Feb. 21 home tournament.

Going into the tournament, the Jaguars were the top-ranked team and, therefore, received a bye going straight into the semi-finals against the Pembina North Community Panthers, defeating them 68 to 16.

The Panthers defeated the Athabasca's Edwin Parr Composite High School in a close game to earn a spot in the playoffs.

In the finals, Barrhead faced Westlock St. Mary Catholic School after they defeated their cross-town rivals, the R.F. Staples Secondary School defeating them in a 43-40 nailbiter.

"St. Mary's played very well, and we had a tough time shooting from the outside. Brady Parsons made our first long-range shot of the game with one minute remaining to put us up by one," he said, adding the Jaguars would go on to score one more basket in the closing seconds to end the game. "Solid defence from all our guys, especially our big guys, won us that game."

The Jaguars will go on to play in the zone championships in Morinville on March 1 and 2.
