Chewy is proving a Hollywood charmer.

Just two weeks into his new life in Tinseltown, the former BARS dog is making friends and influencing them.

So much so, that he seems a shoo-in for a back-up role in a Disney comedy series. He has all the right attributes: intelligence, a sweet and lovable nature, and, of course, good looks.

His new owner at Good Dog Animals in Los Angeles, the equivalent of a dog talent-scouting agency, is impressed by everything he has seen.

“Chewy is doing great,” said Steve Solomon last Wednesday. “After we picked him up, we groomed him straight away. We gave him a bath and we did his toenails.”

Solomon said Chewy had already started his training, which involved mixing and mingling with people and dogs and getting used to the movie set.

“He is about to start the next level of training,” Solomon said.

Chewy’s path to Hollywood began after BARS rescued him from an abusive situation about nine months ago.

This summer BARS president and founder Terry Colborne selected Chewy for “Dog of the week,” an initiative to publicize adoptable pets.

His details were posted online and seen by Solomon, who was looking for a double of Mick, a dog chosen to star in Disney’s upcoming “Dog With A Blog.”

The show – about a blended family and their talking canine – premieres on Friday, Oct. 12 and will continue in its regular slot starting Sunday, Nov. 4.

On Sept. 15, Chewy and his escorts boarded a WestJet plane from Edmonton for LA, his passage made possible by ARTS (Animal Rescue Transfer System) Air Angels.

Solomon’s first impressions of Chewy were positive, although the four-year-old cream-coloured Pyrenees cross was much larger than he appeared to be in pictures and videos.

Was that a problem?

“No, not at all,” said Solomon. “If we put Chewy and Mick side by side you would see a big difference in size, but that won’t be happening.”

More importantly, added Solomon, Chewy’s face was perfect, even from the dips in his ears.

“He is a really good dog and we have started putting him through his paces,” he said. “Things are very promising. Chewy is very smart and gets along with little dogs and big dogs. He’s got a really sweet nature.”

Solomon said he wanted three or four back-ups for Mick, who would be taking the lead role. This was where Chewy could come in.

So what are Chewy’s chances of one of these back-up roles?

“I would say he has pretty much got the part,” said Solomon.
