County of Barrhead issues fire advisory

Advisory also in effect for Westlock County
The Barrhead Fire Department is gearing up for what could be a busy wild fire season. This picture was taken last April at a grass fire near Range Road 45 and Township 590.

BARRHEAD — A fire advisory has been issued for the County of Barrhead, which will take effect at 4:30 p.m. today, March 19.

According to a notice from Barrhead Regional Fire Services (BRFS) chief Gary Hove, no new permits will be issued until spring fire conditions allow for safer burning. Existing fire permits will be monitored and maintained until extinguishment.

Burn barrels and the areas around burn barrels should be maintained to mitigate fire spread. All previous permitted burns are required to be checked on, and permit-holders should mitigate any hold-over fires.

All residents are encouraged to use caution with allowed recreational fires, such as campfires.

It should be noted that a fire advisory has been in effect since Feb. 23 for Westlock County due to the lack of precipitation during the fall and winter months.

Residents are urged to revisit any winter burn sites to ensure those fires have been completely extinguished, as improperly extinguished fires can burn underground for months and then resurface during the spring on hot, dry and windy days.

A fire is not completely extinguished until there is absolutely no heat emanating from the ashes.
