Firefighters with the Barrhead Regional Fire Services try to contain a blaze northwest of the Hamlet of Vega on Dec. 10. The fire completely destroyed the house and attached garage. One occupant was treated for smoke inhalation and possible burns.

BARRHEAD - A mechanical malfunction is believed to be the cause of a Dec. 10 fire that destroyed a home and attached garage near the Hamlet of Vega, which is located 33 kilometres north of the Town of Barrhead.

Barrhead Regional Fire Services received a dispatch to a structure fire just a few miles northwest of Vega at 5:54 p.m. that day, said fire chief Gary Hove via e-mail.

They were able to respond quickly, as firefighters had just returned to the station after a medical assist call, Hove said.

Upon arrival, they found the home and attached garage fully involved in flames. Luckily, the occupants had evacuated the home safely, he said.

While the home and garage were a total loss, firefighters worked to control the blaze and protect other nearby property.

Hove said EMS also attended the scene to assess one of the occupants for smoke inhalation and possible small burns to his hands. They remained on the scene while firefighters fought to bring the blaze under control and then extinguish.

Fortis also arrived on scene and quickly restored power to the farm yard, Hove said.

He said the cause of the fire has been traced to a side-by-side — a small four-wheel off-road vehicle — in the attached garage, which one of the occupants of the house had been working on.

Something had malfunctioned in the vehicle and it caught fire, Hove said, noting the occupant had tried to remove the vehicle from the garage but could not.

However, the occupant and his family had removed a few items to safety before the blaze became too risky, Hove noted.
