BARRHEAD – Joan Gravel has been recognized with the Pembina Hills School Division's Exemplary Support Services Award for her long-standing commitment to staff and students at École Barrhead Elementary School.
The award was announced on June 20, with the division highlighting Gravel’s her dedication to supporting education in the community.
“For many years, Joan Gravel has been a pillar of support for staff and students at École Barrhead Elementary School, consistently demonstrating unparalleled dedication and a profound love for her work,” said Pembina Hills School Division.
Gravel’s devotion to her role goes far beyond expectations, the board said in a release. Known for going above and beyond, Gravel arrives early each day to greet kindergarten students as they step off the bus and ensures everything is ready for the day ahead. She also stays late to assist with cleanup and prepares for the following day.
Her willingness to go the extra mile is unmatched, even taking toys, furniture and equipment, like coiling machines, home for repair frequently with the help of her husband.
Her care for the children and her team members shines in every interaction.
Whether sitting or colouring, or listening intently to a child’s story, or joining in playtime or offering quiet comfort to a nervous child on the playground, Gravel instinctively understands what each child needs.
Sometimes that might be it, gentle encouragement, a supportive word, a walk, a snack, or to be allowed to sit on or a hug her.
Her thoughtful individualized approach makes every child feel seen, heard, and valued.
Gravel warmly welcomes new team members, helping them feel confident and capable.
She is always ready to encourage new ideas.
With an uncanny ability to anticipate what's needed, she often is one step ahead making things easier for everyone around her.

She tackles everything from cleaning accidents and spills to comforting unwell children with patience, grace, and without complaint.
