Watch Main Street come to life during the annual Christmas Light Up on Friday, Nov. 13.

Families, friends and business owners are all invited to take part in the festivities and celebrate the Christmas season on Main Street. The event kicks off with fireworks and the light up of down town businesses at 7:00 p.m. followed by a parade filled with floats created by local businesses.

Bringing the parade to a close is a very special guest, Santa Claus.

Grab a bite before the big event between 5:30 and 6:30 at Barrhead Custom Meats, where the grill will be hot, and burgers will be served for a small fee that goes to the school’s hot lunch program.

ATB Financial and Scotia Bank will be keeping everyone warm with their hot chocolate and cookies tables.

Also following the parade will be a fire pit put on by the Northern Lights Snowmobile Club, a toboggan hill if there is snow, sleigh rides, and the Barrhead Light Up Christmas Market at the Barrhead Legion, where Santa will make a special visit.

The market will feature home based businesses, and while parents peruse the products for sale children will have the opportunity to have their picture taken with Santa.

The hunt is on. Featured in this week’s edition is the colouring contest. Children who enter drop off their pictures at the Barrhead Leader by 2:00 p.m. the day of the event. Between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. children find their pictures in the window of participating businesses, go inside, and receive their candy bag.

The Barrhead Chamber of Commerce commemorates those who shop local, and starting Friday, Nov. 13, they will kick-off the Barrhead Chamber of Commerce Shop Local Contest, where $2,000 in Chamber Local Loot is up for grabs.

Chamber Local loot is money that can be spent at any of the participating businesses.

In order to enter to win, people must shop locally, and when they do they will receive a ballot, which the customer fills out, and drops into the ballot box.

The Chamber will draw for the winner on December 18.
