Preschool fundraiser offers something different

People going by the Barrhead Elementary School gym might see some smoke coming out of the gym.

At least they might if it is Feb. 28, but don’t worry, it is just part of the show.

On that date fire eater and side show performer, Carisa Hendrix, will visit the school as part of the Barrhead and District Preschool’s annual Ladies Inferno fundraiser.

The Barrhead and District Preschool is a non-profit group that provides classes to three and four-year olds to help children prepare for Kindergarten and Grade 1.

Jenny Williams, organizer of the women’s only annual fundraiser, said the group wanted to change up their event.

“This is our sixth annual ladies night out fundraiser and this time I wanted to do something a little bit different,” she said, adding that with Hendrix she believes she has accomplished her goal.

Hendrix is a Calgary based model and entertainer, who is best known for putting on a circus sideshow type act. She will be putting on a version of her famous fire and light show.

“I know Barrhead has never seen anything like it,” Williams said. “It is really something to see, she walks on glass, twirls rings of fire and of course eats fire.”

In past years, the preschool organizes a sit down dinner followed by entertainment. However, this year will follow a different format, in part because of the type of stunts Hendrix will be performing.

Williams said Hendrix and her team will be performing almost continuously throughout the night, taking breaks periodically to “air out the gym” or set up her next stunt, until the grand finale at about 10:30 p.m.

At the same time, in 30 minute intervals, servers will bring out an assortment of appetizers. “Each time there will be four different types of appetizers so there will be something for everyone,” she said, adding that a midnight lunch will also be served.

Williams said there will also be a 50/50 draw and a silent auction.

Tickets are $40 and are available at The Flower Shoppe.

Because alcohol is being served the event is restricted to women 18 or older.

Doors open at 7 p.m. For more information about the event call Jenny at 780-674-0798.
