NEERLANDIA - The Sonshine Boutique is back for its second event, opening at the Neerlandia Replica Store from May 7 to May 10. The four-day thrift pop-up will feature gently used ladies' clothing, accessories, and shoes—all donated by community members.

Organizers say the boutique’s debut in September 2024 exceeded expectations, both in turnout and fundraising.

“It exceeded our expectations. I don’t think any of us really had an idea of how successful this would be,” said Eva Visser, one of the original organizers. “We reached close to $4,000 in donations.”

The boutique will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cash and e-transfers will be accepted, and shoppers will have access to on-site change rooms to try on items.

All proceeds will be shared between Amber’s Hope Maternity Home, the Pregnancy Care Centre, and the Wilberforce Project—three organizations that support women and families in Alberta.

The idea for a faith-led thrift event to support local causes came from Karen Wierenga, and quickly grew with the help of fellow community members. The founding team includes Fran Miedema, Jo-Ann Nanninga, Eva Visser, Diane Wierenga, Nicole Krikke and Wierenga herself. This year, Karen Mast joins the organizing group and will also help staff the boutique.

Visitors are encouraged to make a day of it. Neerlandia offers more than just the boutique—shoppers can stop for a meal or coffee at the Neerlandia Co-op restaurant, known for its affordable prices and quality food. The nearby Co-op grocery and hardware stores also stock a range of essentials and specialty items.

Just next to the Replica Store is the community’s windmill reconstruction site, where volunteers are working to restore the historic structure.

“We hope everyone will come out to shop, support great causes, and enjoy everything Neerlandia has to offer,” said Visser.
