The Barrhead Van-Go secret is out and people need to know

Private functions, weddings, a ride out to Fort Assiniboine, shopping ride or a ride to Main Street for a coffee as well as a medical appointment ride can all be accommodated by the FCSS Van-Go program

The FCSS Van-Go Transportation program offers rides when residents don't have transportation for all those important things happening and provides a freedom to residents they may not have had.

BARRHEAD — A local transportation program run by the Barrhead FCSS Society is providing more than just a ride – for many, it’s a gateway to independence, social connection, and improved quality of life.

The Community Transportation Program was originally launched to support residents aged 55 and older and those living with disabilities. Since then, the range of services has expanded to include scheduled trips for medical appointments, county runs into Barrhead, in-town shopping and errands, and private bookings for events such as weddings, family reunions, and funerals.

“When they get on the bus and they find out about it they are excited and happy that it exists,” said Ryan Ossevorth, the FCSS van driver. “Then we do the runs, and they say I'm so happy this is here, it is so convenient.”

Rickie Sutherland, project leader, said the service provides freedom to people, allowing them to participate in community life — something many are deeply grateful for.

Ossevorth recalled that one woman cried after using the service to attend an Easter dinner with her family, something she hadn’t been able to do in years.

The weekly van schedule offers set days for different services. Mondays are for county residents seeking one-way or round-trip travel into Barrhead. Tuesdays and Thursdays are reserved for medical appointments, while Wednesdays and Fridays serve as in-town run days for errands such as grocery shopping or meeting friends for coffee. Scheduled service to and from Fort Assiniboine also takes place on Wednesdays and Fridays.

There are reasonable fees for rides, and subsidies are available for low-income seniors and individuals with disabilities. The van is wheelchair-accessible.

In addition to essential services, the program accommodates private group bookings, including transportation to events like Christmas parties and dinner theatre outings. A recent group booked the van to attend a go-karting event in town. These bookings require a minimum of four people and must be made at least 48 hours in advance.

Some clients have booked rides to go shopping, visit friends, or simply get out of the house. Seniors living in care homes can also take advantage of the service for a change of scenery or social activities.

Taking part in the transportation program, said Ossevorth, gives riders an improved quality of life.

The van, affectionately named Van-Go, made recent appearances at the Pembina West Co-op Barbecue and the Seniors Expo.
