BARRHEAD – It’s that time again when we move our clocks forward by one hour at 2 a.m. on March 9.

As we spring forward there will be less light in the mornings and lighter in the evenings pushing both sunrise and sunset times 1 hour later.

What affects can be expected with the time change?

“We found several studies on sleep and biological rhythms, with an overwhelming consensus for disruption of sleep quantity and quality associated with the spring switch to daylight savings,” said the Canadian Sleep Society in their 2022 Report.

“Together with a negative influence on daytime functioning.”

Studies have shown that sleep deprivation causes Social Jetlag which is defined as when your internal clock doesn’t match your sleep patterns.

The time change to Daylight Savings of moving ahead by one hour can disrupt a person’s internal clock for several days according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

They have recommendations to make the time change easier on the body.

Adjusting your sleep time by 10 or 20 minutes earlier than usual in the days before the time change can be beneficial.

Set your clocks ahead on March 8 by one hour in the early evening and then go to bed at your normal bedtime.

On Sunday getting exposure to sunlight can help in adjustment to the time change.

Get lots of sleep Sunday night and start the Spring Ahead day well rested.
