Twenty Barrhead residents report vehicles being vandalized in early morning hours

BARRHEAD — The Barrhead RCMP Detachment is seeking the public’s assistance in tracking down a suspect responsible for a rash of vandalism incidents in the early morning hours of Feb. 10. 

A release from the Barrhead detachment indicates that around 3:30 a.m., a caller reported seeing a suspect smash their car window. 

The release states police began making patrols and eventually located 18 vehicles in the area south of Elevator Road in Barrhead had been vandalized. 

A police dog was brought in and a track was followed to a local residence in the area, but a suspect was not located. 

Since then, the number of residents reporting acts of vandalism ranging from paint scratches to broken car windows has increased to 20. 

Anyone who lives in the area south of Elevator Road and has video surveillance is asked to check the time period between midnight and 4 a.m. on Feb. 10. 

The suspect has been described as a tall younger-looking male dressed in black. He was last seen running towards the boardwalk. 

Also, residents are asked to check for footwear impressions or anything else suspicious on their property.

Copper wire thefts 

The RCMP is also investigating a series of copper wire thefts from industrial sites in Barrhead and Woodlands Counties. 

Three sites have been hit since Feb. 4. The first theft occurred on that day at approximately 3:30 am. In the area of Township Road 584 and Highway 777. 

The second theft happened on a site in the area of Range Road 13 and Township Road 567 at approximately 3:45 a.m. on Feb. 6. 

The third theft occurred on a site at 6423 Township Road 574 at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 7. 

In each case, the suspects were captured on video surveillance. They knew their way around these plants and had likely scouted the areas previously, the RCMP release notes. 

Total damage is in the range of hundreds of thousands of dollars. 

Residents who observe suspicious activity in the detachment are asked to call the police immediately, and anyone with information about these thefts in particular is asked to call the Barrhead detachment at (780) 674-2696.
