Woodlands County Sign
Woodlands County will not be making a financial contribution to the proposed arts, culture & events centre/library project within the Town of Whitecourt, which is currently estimated to cost $48.23 million to build.

BARRHEAD/WHITECOURT - Woodlands County issued a statement on Friday that the municipality will not be financially contributing to the proposed arts, culture and convention centre/library project within the Town of Whitecourt.

In February, the Town of Whitecourt requested Woodlands County make a financial contribution of $7,059,136.55, as based on a current estimate of $48,232,658.70 to construct the two project components.

“Woodlands County holds the same position from 2016 regarding this project and chooses not to participate,” the release states.

“The county is confident that funds are best spent within the municipality on projects supported by its residents.”

The release further references the results of an online survey that was conducted during the first half of April. (Paper copies of the survey could also be filled out at the municipal offices in Fort Assiniboine and Whitecourt.)

As part of that survey, Woodlands County residents were asked if they were in favour of making a financial contribution to the project.

Amongst the 446 valid responses that were received to the online survey, 82 per cent of respondents indicated they would not use the proposed culture and events centre.

Eighty-seven per cent further indicated they would not be willing to support a tax increase, “which is the county’s sole option to support the proposed initiative,” the release noted.

“Woodlands County believes public consultation is paramount and focuses on supporting the wishes and best interests of its residents, while pursuing its current and long-term financial strategy.”

The release ends with the county thanking the Town of Whitecourt for the opportunity to consider funding a portion of the arts, culture, convention centre and library project.
