The Premier's office released a statement Monday morning, saying Premier Danielle Smith was recently contacted by the Ethics Commissioner, who is investigating whether or not the Premier interfered with the administration of justice in relation to a COVID prosecution.

The matter has continued to be in the forefront around a controversial taped phone conversation between Smith and Calgary street preacher Artur Pawlowski, who was facing charges around the Coutts border blockade.

"The Premier welcomes this investigation, is fully cooperating with the Commissioner, and is confident this examination will confirm there has been no interference.

"As a result of the ongoing investigation, it would be inappropriate for the Premier to comment on this further, until the investigation is completed," said the statement.

Alberta NDP Justice Critic Irfan Sabir said the investigation opened by the Ethics Commissioner into the Premier's interference in the justice system is necessary, but he is reinforcing the need for an independent judicial investigation as well.
