Hailey Booth is the holder of this year’s Westlock & District Grand Champion Steer title.

Hailey, with her Black Angus steer ZANDER first won Club Champion steer of the Flatbush Beef Club, rising above all other steers in her club, including her sister Ashley, who was last year’s Club Champion and later District Reserve Champion.

Steer judges Dennis Ericson and Jim Round, who had each judged three of the six clubs earlier in the June 6 steer show at Nilsson Bros. at Clyde combined their efforts to select their District champions from the Top 12 steers.

For their District Reserve Champion Steer, the two judges couldn’t have made third year Eme Artemenko any happier. They chose the Double Diamond member’s Club Champion Speckle Park steer STRIKE for honour.

The selection of the Grand and Reserve Grand Champion steers was pretty much the highlight of the two-day show, which started Sunday, June 5 with the female show.

This year, the six clubs in the Westlock & District, namely Golden Sunset, Double Diamond, Flatbush, Sunniebend, Vimy DunRobin and Pembina West, produced 77 steers. The steers were sold in the early afternoon Monday following the steer show.

Hailey’s steer ZANDER started off the 4-H year at an even 800 pounds and finished the year at 1,426 pounds for a 2.2# ADG. Her steer was purchased at the sale for $3.30 per pound by Westlock Veterinary Centre.

Eme’s Speckle Park steer STRIKE started the year at 700 pounds and finished at 1,416 pounds for a 3.25# ADG. Her steer was purchased by Bumper to Bumper in Westlock for $2 per pound.

The 77 steers racked up a total of 96,207 pounds of beef on the hoof and buyers picked them up for a total of $159,925.49 to average $1.66 per pound (all unofficial figures). The average price is about $.20 per pound more than last year’s sale.
