A Grade 6 student at Eleanor Hall School recently won a local competition sponsored by the Vimy Lions club and will have her entry submitted to the worldwide Lions International Peace Poster Contest.

Shaylean West’s poster is among more than 375,000 entries submitted worldwide for the 25th annual contest, which is held to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere.

“I want to let the whole world see peace,” said the 11-year-old student from Clyde.

The poster was selected by members of the Lions Club for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme “Imagine Peace.” Judging was held at Eleanor Hall School on Nov. 9.

Vimy Lions Club president Vince Rosksa said, “it is obvious that these young people have definite ideas about what peace means to them. I’m proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions.”

He noted West’s poster will face stiff competition through the district, multiple district and (if she is lucky) international rounds of judging.

At the end of the Peace Poster Contest, one grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners will be selected.

“Our club is cheering for Shaylean as her poster advances in the competition and we hope that her vision will ultimately be shared with others around the world,” said Roska.
