Albertans like to take their summers to enjoy the limited sunny weather before getting back into the swing of things each fall.
Community groups of all types tend to take this hiatus as well, resulting in a flurry of registrations and organizing every September.
In Westlock, the process of signing up for your favourite community group, volunteer organization or winter sports team has been greatly simplified with the annual Community Showcase.
“It’s for any organization or club in town that would like to showcase themselves to the community, whether it’s to intrigue more members or to gain volunteers,” said Courtney von Rennenkampf, Westlock’s community services program supervisor.
“More so for people in the community to come out and see what’s happening.”
The event has historically drawn close to 20 booths, with organizations such as Westlock Minor Hockey, Westlock Girl Guides and the Westlock Fire Department taking part.
This year’s event runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Westlock Rotary Spirit Centre this Tuesday, Sept. 11. Organizations will have tables and booths set up to display what they have to offer.
Many different organizations will also hold their official registration nights in conjunction with the event, von Rennenkampf added, so residents hoping to register for one particular group can also learn about what else there is in town.
“There will be a lot of traffic right throughout the centre that night, with good exposure for the clubs,” she said.
The Westlock Community Art Club will have a high profile during the event, as they will hold the official grand opening of their new Spirit Centre gallery space at the same time as the community showcase.
The group has been in the process of moving their gallery from its old space in the Heritage Building to its new space on the second floor of the Spirit Centre.
