Doug Nyal was honoured as Clyde Ag Society’s volunteer of the year at the annual Ag 500 banquet held at Clyde Community Hall April 25.

Nyal, who serves as mayor of the village, said he was humbled to have received the recognition, especially given the number of residents that volunteer on a regular basis.

“It’s a great honour, being recognized for the volunteer service, out of all our volunteers in the community, to be singled out, means a lot to me,” Nyal said. “I respect all the volunteers and admire them all. Without the volunteers we wouldn’t have the community that we have.”

As per tradition, the previous year’s winner introduced the new winner. Co-recipient of the 2014 award, Shonda Sawchyn, spoke of Nyal’s character and dedication.

“There are people that step up, not because of financial gain or personal ego, but because they believe in their community. They believe in their responsibility,” Sawchyn said.

“Some would wonder why paid officials would qualify for this award, but the volunteer work this man has done for years, and continues to do … we know he will continue to do the same for many years to come.”

Ag society president Perry Lumayko said Nyal was an easy choice.

“It was a very easy choice, he has done so much and it’s been for years,” Lumayko said.

“He was born and raised in this community and he works all the time. No matter what it is, or which group it is, it can be Parks and Play, the seniors, the ag society, fire department, he’ll help anybody.”

Nyal received a standing ovation from the crowd of approximately 150 that packed the hall on Saturday night. After making his way up to the stage and accepting his award, Nyal took the microphone and addressed the crowd.

“My family has dedicated their life to this community and I guess I’m just carrying on with it,” he said. “That’s why we do it. Thank you very much.”

The ag society also took a moment to honour fire department members Barry Nyal, Dennis Hampshire, and Perry Lumayko for 15 years of service. Jim Rau and Dale Ford were presented with rings commemorating their 30 plus years of service with the department.
