Early Valentine’s Day events planned for Feb. 8-9

If you’re looking to celebrate St. Valentine’s Day a few days’ ahead of time, the Barrhead Public Library and the Parent Link Centre both have some fun events planned for this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8-9.

On Feb. 8, the Barrhead Public Library will host a free adults-only cookie-decorating class led by Ruth McNaughton at 1 p.m.

Library director Elaine Dickie said they often do a Valentine’s Day-themed event, like an afternoon where kids get to make their own cards.

“This year we thought maybe because most of our stuff is for kids, we’d do a few adult things … so there’d be something for everybody,” she said.

McNaughton lives in the Barrhead area but has done a lot of cake decorating in her career, Dickie said.

“She’ll just demonstrate different techniques for decorating cookies,” she said. “A big part of what we’re about at the library is people coming together to share ideas. This is just another opportunity for that.”

All utensils will be provided as part of the class. Dickie said they’re hoping for about eight to 10 people to sign up, adding that would make for a perfect-sized group.

“Whether those cookies actually make it home or they get nibbled on the way home is totally up to the person who makes the cookie. There’s nothing that says you have to give someone the cookie,” she joked.

Anyone wishing to sign up for the “Cookies with Ruth” class should call the library at (780) 674-8519 to pre-register.

Family Fun event

On Feb. 9, the Parent Link Centre will be hosting a more family-focused event that is geared towards young children, though parents are free to attend as well.

“Family Fun: A Valentine’s Date will run from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Parent Link Centre, which is located at 5115 45th Street.

Rebecca Breitkreitz, Parent Link programmer and youth co-ordinator, said they will be doing some crafts like “love bugs” and “love monsters.”

There will also be a chocolate fountain set up, along with some fruit for children to get some chocolate-coated treats.

In addition to their regular programs, the Parent Link Centre hosts a unique family event every month. The last such event was on Jan. 12, when they held a pizza party at the Blue Heron Bowl.

“We were at max capacity,” Breitkreitz said. “(A Valentine’s Date) will be a smaller event because the capacity of our kitchen is slightly smaller.”

She said they are hoping to have about 25 parents and children register for the event, which they can do by calling (780) 674-3341.

On a side note, the annual Kub Kar races will also be taking place this Thursday, Feb. 7 at 6:30 p.m. in the Charles Godberdson Rotary Room.
