Hanna Gregoire is carrying on a family tradition of excellence in raising 4-H beef animals as a member of Sunniebend 4-H Beef Club.
Hanna was this year’s District Grand Champion Steer winner at the Westlock District 4-H Achievement Day show and sale June 2-3. The champion title is shared with her mother, Debbie Gregoire and aunts Tina and Leah. All three won the District Grand Champion Steer title in their 4-H days with the Sunniebend 4-H Beef Club. Debbie won it at least twice in her 4-H years.
Hanna’s steer, Maverick, started out the club year at 849 pounds and finished at 1,407 pounds for a 2.98 pound ADG. Slave Lake Specialty purchased the steer for $4.10 per pound. Hanna didn’t limit her wins to just the steer championship. At club level, she won Reserve Champion Heifer and Heifer Junior Champion Grooming, second in Junior Heifer Showmanship, Champion Cow/Calf, and second in Steer Junior Showmanship.
Some of this, beyond her steer win, was carried through to the District level as well. She had the Grand Champion Cow/Calf and Overall Champion Cow/Calf.
The District Reserve Champion this year went to Kiana Hein of the Golden Sunset 4-H Beef Club.
Her steer weighed out at 1,475 pounds and was purchased by Bumper to Bumper in Westlock for $3.50 per pound. Kiana also did well at the club level. In addition to Club Champion Steer, she had the Club Reserve Champion Heifer, was Heifer first in Senior Showmanship and Senior Grooming.
This year, a total of 75 steers were shown from the five participating clubs in the Westlock District.
The 96,471 pounds of steers sold for a total of $220,706.15 for an average of $2.29 per pound. Figures are unofficial.
Other District Champions this year at the two day show held at Nilsson Bros. auction facility at Clyde included: Grand Champion Heifer, won by Eme Artemenko of Double Diamond, Reserve Grand Champion Heifer won by Payton Gregoire of Sunniebend, Reserve Champion Cow/Calf, Champion three-year Cow/Calf and Overall Reserve Champion Cow/Calf and Junior Showmanship first won by Payton Gregoire of Sunniebend and Reserve Champion three-year Cow/Calf won by Lily Artemenko of Double Diamond.
In other competitions, Hailey Booth of Flatbush won Senior Showmanship first, Lily Artemenko of Double Diamond was second, and Kassi Rinas of Double Diamond was second in Junior Showmanship.
Senior Judging was won by Briana Carlyon of Sunniebend and second went to by Shae-Lynn Seib of Double Diamond.
Intermediate Judging was won by Tonie Zutz-Parrent of Golden Sunset and second went to by Cassandra VandeLigt of Pembina West.
In Junior Judging, Brookelyn Felske of Double Diamond won, with second going to Kaylee Brandl of Flatbush.
In District Record Books, Junior Steer was won by Kassidy Geiger of Golden Sunset, Intermediate Steer won by Dylan Seib of Double Diamond, Junior Steer won by Kaylee Huppertz of Golden Sunset, Senior Heifer won by Shae-Lynn Seib of Double Diamond, Intermediate Heifer won by Ryley Patriquin of Golden Sunset, Junior Heifer won by Brookelyn Felske of Double Diamond and Cole Huppertz of Golden Sunset won two-year Year Cow/Calf.
This year a Pen of Four Steers was added to the steer show. This was won by the Golden Sunset club.
