The Westlock Flock improv troupe has big plans for a May 14 comedy show at CATS Theatre starting at 7 p.m. Back row, L-R, are Flock members Maggie Barry, Kira Ramsay, Sarah Barry and Deanna Ducharme with Alyssa Melanson and Michael Ashton on the floor.

The Westlock Flock is in prime improvisational form, just in time to perform for the public at their May 14 show at the CATS Theatre at 7 p.m.

Fresh off a win at an improv competition at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton April 10, where the team received their highest score ever, they are hoping to have members of the community in stitches when they perform for the final time this school year.

“They were against two other high school teams, both from Edmonton,” said improv coach Abby Keyes, who volunteers to run the program. “Usually we’re happy if we’re not last place because this is such a new concept — this is our third year in — whereas other schools have been doing it for 10-plus years, and they have their drama teacher there and it’s part of their whole arts program.”

Three-year Flock veteran Alyssa Melanson called it a “huge accomplishment.”

“It was amazing. We had a very small group that day, but we managed to get first in our division which is a huge accomplishment for us because we’ve never done that well. We’re very proud of ourselves,” she said.

The May 14 show promises to provide some chuckles and the Flock invites the community to come and take part. The group will be playing different drama games, or theatresports, of which there are hundreds to choose from. The second half of the show gets interactive with the audience.

“In the first half, they’ll be getting suggestions from the audience, then the second half will be more interactive and we’ll get audience members to come up on stage,” said Keyes.

“It’s going to be so much fun,” said Melanson. “It’s tons of fun for both the actors and the audience.”

Fellow Flock member Michael Ashton said a lot of work has gone into preparing for the comedy improv show and he’s excited to show off the skills they’ve learned.

“We definitely work really hard on this ... we put a lot of time into it and it’s just nice to have the support to show that what we’re doing matters to the community,” he said.

“It’s going to be a really fun show. It’s very unexpected, but hilarious. We’re going to have treats and raffles. It’s just going to be very exciting,” said Keyes.
