Singer Phyllis Sinclair will be filling the Nancy Appleby Theatre with folk music on Saturday night.
She is the last Heartwood Folk Club performer until next spring.
Although she has never performed in Athabasca, she knows many people from the area, and thinks it will be a great show.
“Many of the songs will be off my new album called Dreams of the Washer Women,” she explained.
“This album was nominated for best folk acoustic album and won the award at the 2011 Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards in Toronto.”
Her album also won her a nomination for female entertainer of the year at the 2012 Aboriginal People’s Choice Awards.
“The collection of songs reflects some of my childhood memories, some funny anecdotes, and there is an enthusiastic and warm energy about this collection of songs,” she said. “Some people have called it classic folk, but I like to think of it as alternative folk because it combines a number of different styles including the classical folk style and some songs are more pop.”
Some of her songs have a country twang to them, but Sinclair said she couldn’t classify them as country.
