Local youth with a passion for music and performance can take their talents to the next level with a recording artist camp in Athabasca this month.
Kathy Dearle and Silver Fox Creative Productions are putting on the camp, which begins the week of April 15 and runs until the end of June. Once a week, budding singers will meet in the loft of the Morning Star Ink building for a comprehensive course in how to take their vocal skills and put them on a CD.
Participants will research their favorite singers and record songs of their choice while designing labels and jackets for their own personal CDís. On June 22, the singers will put on a show at the Nancy Appleby Theatre; a tribute to the famed Funk Brothers as well as a showcase of their own recorded material.
When the camp is over, the participants will have a background in the recording process and will have improved as singers and performers, according to Dearle.
ìI want them to see the other side of performing,î she said.
Dearle knows there is a lot of talent in the area, some with the potential to go into the entertainment business if they are properly prepared.
ìThey canít just go for singing lessons. They have to have the whole package. (After the camp) theyíll have a CD to take with them to promote themselves.î
The camp will make use of Dearleís extensive collection of professional sound and recording equipment. The cost to take part in the camp is $95 per month ($285 total). Kids can register by picking up (and returning) forms to Morning Star Ink or by calling Kathy at 780-213-0199.
ìI want them to really encourage each other and not be afraid of making mistakes, because it happens. The more you perform and get in front of people and experience different things, the better youíre going to become.î
