At this time of year, most people are doing their best to cope with the post-holiday blues, but for others, the party is just about to get started.

Westlock’s Ukrainian Dance Society is getting ready for their annual Malanka celebration on Jan. 17 at Memorial Hall.

“We print 285 tickets and typically we sell out,” said dance society president Charmaine Babiak.

“I believe there’s only 30 tickets that are left this year.”

Although loosely translated as ‘Mother of Earth’ Malanka is generally known as a celebration to usher in the New Year starting Jan. 13 for those who follow the Julian Calendar.

Originally starting out as a way for the local Ukrainian population to get together, according to Babiak, the Malanka celebration here in Westlock has turned into a successful fundraiser for the society and a great way to have some fun for the whole community.

”We get a variety of people who come out to watch the kids dance,” said Babiak.

“But our dancers range in age from four all the way up into the 70s.”

Although the traditional dance performance courtesy of the Vrozhay Ukrainian Dancers serves as the main attraction of the family friendly event, patrons will also be treated to cocktails beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by a catered Anglo-Slavic buffet at 6:30 p.m., as well as a 50/50 draw and silent auction for the kids.

The celebration concludes with a dance to take place after the main performance sometime after 8 p.m.

“This year we have a DJ instead of a live band. They’ve done other Malanka’s in the past and have come highly recommended.”

Ticket prices start at $30 for teens and adults, $20 for kids four and up and children under the age of three are free but must still have a ticket.

Those hoping to get their hands on the few tickets still available should contact Fountain Tire in Westlock either by phone at 780-349-3029 or in person at 10843 100 Street.
