Southview Neighbourhood League BBQ on Friday

People looking for a bit to eat and learn about the Southview Neighbourhood League’s plans for their local park are invited to come down to Sobeys this Friday.

The league had planned to hold its fundraising barbecue on July 25, but the heavy rains that soaked the region that day put those plans on hold and caused the league to reschedule to Friday.

League president Mike Edwards said the purpose of the barbecue is to raise funds to “kick start” the league by helping it to pay the administration fees necessary to get set up as a society and apply for grants.

Following the barbecue, the league will hold its annual general meeting in September, at which time it will start its agenda and figure out the direction it wants to go with respect to the park’s future format. The date and time of the AGM will be determined closer to September.

So far the league has completed all its paperwork and just needs to file it with the provincial government.

“The setup is almost complete,” he said. “Now we just have to wait for everything to get sent in and come back to us and we’re ready to go.”

The barbecue will run from 10 a.m. until past the supper hour on Aug. 1, Edwards said.

“Hopefully we’re going to have better weather than we had today,” he said last Friday. “Looking ahead on the weather man, it looks like it should be good, but that’s a week away.”

Sobeys will take care of all the food details, Edwards explained, and donate a portion of the proceeds back to the league.

“All we have to do is be there and answer questions,” he said, adding the league will have a map of the park on hand, as well as pamphlets to hand out.
