Canadian fiddle champion Scott Woods will once again play in Athabasca.

Last year the fiddle legend show filled the Nancy Appleby Theatre, and Woods was impressed with the turnout.

He will be returning this year on May 29.

“We are looking forward to coming back, we had a good crowd last time and there was a good response,” he said.

“It is a nice theatre, so we are looking forward to it again this year.”

Woods explained that the only carry over from year to year is his trick fiddling.

“I have a reputation; my nickname is the flipping fiddler,” he explained. “I somersault while I am playing, and then I do a front running flip.”

Woods said many of the people who return to his shows year after year look for his signature move.

“I tuck the fiddle under my chin, start playing, and do a tumble,” he said. “The routine changes, but I will be doing some trick fiddling.”

This year’s show is called Swinging Fiddles.

“We are taking the old swing music, big band, pop standards and the like from the ‘20s, ‘30s, ‘40s, ‘50s, and we have written arrangements for three fiddles in three-part harmony, plus the band behind,” he explained.

“It is a different sound. You expect saxophones, trumpets and trombones for the big band sound, yet the fiddles sound great. It is a very lyrical approach to those tunes, yet they still have that swing and groove.”

Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for kids ages 6-12 and kids 5 and under get in free. Tickets are available at Value Drug Mart or by calling 1-855-726-8896.
