Town of Westlock Coun. David Truckey will seek to replace Ken Kowalski as the Progressive Conservative candidate in Barrhead-Morinville-Westlock.

He told the Westlock News of his plans Sunday afternoon.

“I’ve been considering it for quite a long time. When there was talk about Ken retiring last spring; certainly I’ve been giving it consideration for quite a while,” he said.

If he is ultimately successful in his bid to become the area’s next MLA, Truckey will obviously have to resign his seat on town council. Until that time, however, he said he intends to continue to do his duty to the town. As for his chances, Truckey is optimistic.

“I think I have a really good chance. It will depend how many other people put their hat into the ring,” he said.

While he believes he has a good support base in Westlock, he said he will have to make connections in other communities to be successful.

“Obviously, whoever runs will have to reach out to other communities and draw from there to really make it count,” he said.

He added he believes his seven years of experience in municipal politics as well as his involvement with many regional boards — he is currently board chair of the Westlock Foundation, for example — will help him to make the transition.

Furthermore, his personal circumstances allow him to make the kind of time sacrifices required to be involved in provincial politics.

“It’s good time for me. My kids are getting older and it’s a good time to jump from the municipal to provincial level.”
