Spicy or not, meal size or for a snack, these beef patties will hit the spot
homemade beef patties
Filled with spicy (or not so spicy beef), this savoury pattie is good for a snack or a meal

Alberta Prime Times columnist Etty Cameron shares her recipe for home-made beef patties. Reminiscent of those she grew up with in Jamaica, these are a less spicy, but still delicious version for a snack or meal.

Ingredients for filling:

500g ground beef

I medium onion finely minced

1tsp thyme

1tsp all-purpose seasoning (available at Walmart or specialty grocers)

¼ tsp salt

 ¾ cup bread crumbs

¼ tsp paprika

chopped hot pepper to taste

Method: Cook ground beef in an iron skillet until crumbly.

Add a bit of water to beef, with onions and chopped pepper. Cook well.

Stir in bread crumbs. Combine all other ingredients and add to mixture until it resembles a slightly runny sauce. Put in fridge to set.

Ingredients for pastry:

2 1/2 cups flour

¾ cup Crisco (or favorite shortening)

 ¼ tsp salt

¼ tsp curry powder

cold water

Method: Combine flour, salt, curry powder. Cut in Crisco. Use water to roll mixture into bread-like dough. Sprinkle a little flour at a time and roll dough into wide sheet. Cut circles. Reroll left over pieces to make as many circles as possible

Assembly:
Put a tsp or tbsp of cooled beef mixture on each circle. Fold circle over and crimp edges with a fork. Put on a sheet and bake in conventional oven at 300 degrees for 20 minutes
