Athabasca RCMP responded to 125 calls for service April 12-23.

ATHABASCA – Athabasca RCMP have attended 14 serious motor vehicle accidents in the last two weeks, two of which resulted in fatalities.

The fatal single-vehicle accidents — one involving an ATV on April 16, and another a pick-up truck April 21 — underlined 125 calls for service members of the Athabasca detachment responded to this month.

In addition, RCMP were dispatched to 12 other vehicle collisions involving property damage, including one where an individual failed to remain on the scene.

There were also 14 other traffic-related calls, one of which resulted in an impaired driving charge.

Four vehicles were stolen in the last two weeks, and there was one call regarding a break and enter, as well as one case of fraud that was investigated.

There were also seven assaults up to April 23, two of them were domestic conflicts, Tessier said.

He went on to note members investigated five suspicious vehicle/people complaints, one of trespassing and 13 911 hang-ups. They also looked into three alarms that turned out to be false on the evening power in the area glitched out for a few seconds.

One COVID-19 related ticket for a violation of the Public Health Act was also given to a resident.

There were also a few unusual or uncommon calls for service, including a complaint about a drone.

“That seems to be a very popular one once the summer villages start filling up,” Tessier said.

RCMP were also informed about counterfeit currency circulating in Calling Lake, and urged businesses throughout the region to be aware.

Members also investigated a suspicious seller on a buy and sell Facebook page that was reported to have sold 24 new pairs of shoes in the last four months, though Tessier noted they haven’t heard of any shoe store robberies in the area recently.
