Town of Westlock councillors will get a look at a plan in early 2021 to open up the pool’s weight room for 24-hour access.

WESTLOCK - Town of Westlock administration will present a plan to council in 2021 to allow for seven-day-a-week, 24-hour access to the Aquatic Centre weight room.

As part of his report at council’s Dec. 14 meeting, community services director Gerry Murphy noted they’ve asked for and received quotes to allow for 24-hour admission to the facility. Those numbers and the entire plan will be in front of council for discussion in January.

“We think we have the opportunity to create an on-demand gym setup at the pool just because the way the building is made,” said Murphy in a follow-up interview.

“There’d be some tweaking to the entry system … we’d use a card system that would get you in the building. We think it would be an added value to the community and again the timing is right.”

Murphy said the notion of setting up the gym for around the clock isn’t new. Currently the facility in closed, as are all pools, rec centres and gyms in Alberta.

“I don’t think they’re (council) going to be surprised by it, I think there’s been some previous discussions about it. This would give the public the opportunity to go at off hours and have a little more freedom to decide when they want to go work out.

“So if we can give that to the residents in a cost-effective way I think it is something we should pursue.”
