Wyatt Thunder has been charged with second degree murder following the March 22 death of Kelsey Thunder.

ATHABASCA - An Athabasca man is in custody, charged with second degree murder in the death of 23-year-old Kelsey Thunder.

Twenty-six year old Wyatt Thunder was arrested and charged March 22, after RCMP responded to the Cornwall Apartments on the east side of Athabasca at 3210 Cornwall Dr. at 3:55 a.m. and determined the victim was deceased.

"The death was deemed suspicious and the RCMP Major Crimes Unit was deployed to take carriage of the investigation," RCMP said in a media release March 25.

A family member, who did not want to be identified, stated March 24 they believe foul play was involved, which has now been confirmed by authorities.

A source inside the apartment complex, which includes a three-storey, 40-unit apartment building, surrounded by numerous townhouses told the Advocate the day of the crime, a woman was stabbed inside one of the townhouses and noted a couple with three young children have lived in the two-storey townhouse for nearly two months.

The family member was unable to confirm whether any children were in the home at the time, but did relay they are now in the care of their grandmother.

Wyatt Thunder was remanded into custody following a judicial interim release hearing and was in Fort Saskatchewan Provincial Court for his first appearance March 25.

As the case is now before the courts, RCMP will be making no further comment.
