A small garden fire on a property about 15-minutes outside of Barrhead quickly got out of control after the wind picked up.

BARRHEAD - Barrhead Regional Fire Services (BRFS) responded to the first wildfire of the season on the afternoon of April 8 on a property about 15 minutes out of town off of Range Road 40.

Fire chief Gary Hove said the resident decided to burn some vegetation at the edge of his garden when the wind picked up, after which the fire quickly spread into the surrounding grass.

"It is fire season. It doesn't take long after the snow melts until everything dries out," he said. "Even the bit of rain we received in the morning by the time the afternoon rolled around, there was no evidence of it."

Once firefighters arrived on the scene, it did not take long to get the fire under control. Unfortunately, Hove said, by that time, the fire had already spread to an outbuilding and several vehicles.

The good news, he said, is that the outbuilding and the vehicles were no longer in use.

He also reminded the public that if they are going to do any burning, be it a brush fire, a burn barrel or incinerator, or an outdoor bonfire, they need to get a fire permit via the fire department or a fire guardian.
