WESTLOCK – The Town of Westlock Community Events Committee is inviting families to join them for a fun-filled, outdoor Family Day event.

For the first time ever, the town will be hosting a coordinated Family Day event organized by the Westlock Community Events Committee that will feature free tractor-pulled hayrides, free hotdogs and free hot chocolate on Family Day, Feb. 20 at the Rotary Spirit Centre (RSC) from 4-6 p.m.

“It’s such a fun activity,” said Family Day event coordinator, Kathy Stanley, recalling similar family hayrides. “If it was beautiful weather on Christmas Day on our acreage, we would hook up our tractor and trailer and take our kids for a little hayride around our acreage.”

The event received some help after several farm equipment dealerships in Westlock stepped up and offered the committee use of their tractor equipment for the event, noted Stanley, which will feature two tractor-pulled trailers for hayrides around the Westlock and District Agricultural Society’s racetrack by the Rotary Spirit Centre.

“I don’t believe that, to my knowledge, that we’ve ever put on a true Family Day event so we’re looking forward to seeing how that works out,” said director of community services Gerry Murphy. “There’s a lot of great volunteers doing a lot of great work to make that a reality.”

Stanley said the committee welcomes families to come out and enjoy some quality time together as they have at other events put on by the committee in recent months, including Canada Day, Music In the Park and the Christmas Light Up. She also encourages residents to volunteer some of their time at upcoming events in 2023.

“We want to do as many events as we can manage and we really need volunteers. The bylaw was passed because we want a vibrant community and to do that, we need volunteers,” said Stanley. “It’s tons of fun to be a part of it.”

There will be other activities for families to enjoy at the town’s facilities on Family Day, including several at the RSC and the Westlock Aquatic centre.
