An RCMP review process is underway after an officer-involved shooting in Westlock over the weekend.

On Saturday, March 11, around 4 p.m., an event unfolded in Westlock that resulted in a local RCMP officer firing their pistol. Nobody was hurt as a result of the incident.

According to a March 13 RCMP release, Westlock RCMP officers were following up on an investigation related to a domestic dispute. Officers learned the suspect was staying at a local business, had outstanding warrants and was likely in possession of a firearm. During the execution of the warrant, one officer discharged their duty pistol.

As soon as the Alberta RCMP became aware of the incident, they notified the director of law enforcement and initiated an internal review process, the release reads.

And while the director has deemed the incident to be "in scope" for ASIRT, the Alberta RCMP Serious Crimes Branch have taken over carriage of the investigation and will provide an update when available.

“Independent of ASIRT, the Alberta RCMP’s internal review process has been implemented to gather a full account of what took place during this incident,” the release reads.

The RCMP training, police and police response will be subject to review and they say they are cooperating fully with ASIRT.
