Busy morning for Athabasca fire and RCMP

Third structure fire in town in two days

ATHABASCA – After responding to two structure fires within the Town of Athabasca early Monday morning, firefighters were called to the scene of one more early this morning on 45th St., on the East Hill.

It is unknown at this time if the fires are connected. However, shortly after responding to this morning's blaze, Athabasca RCMP were in pursuit of a man and arrested him in downtown Athabasca on 50th Ave. (Highway 55) across from the Grand Union Hotel.

Witnesses said the man arrested was well-known to the downtown Athabasca area. It is unknown if the arrest is related to this morning's fire or yesterdays'.

The Monday morning fires took place at the old long term care grounds with an out-building, and an abandoned house on 48th Ave. The string of fires also comes just weeks after the old Home Hardware building on the riverfront was destroyed in a fire that has since been deemed an arson. Police said last week there was not enough evidence to proceed with charges against anyone at this time.

This story is evolving and will be updated as more information becomes available.
