Elderly Smith man faces charge of impaired driving causing death

SMITH – An 83-year-old Smith man faces charges of impaired driving causing death, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and impaired driving following an early-morning, Dec. 27 accident in the tiny hamlet situated 90 kilometres northwest of the Town of Athabasca.

In a release, Slave Lake RCMP report that at 12:23 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 27, they along with fire crews and EMS, were dispatched to a pedestrian collision in the hamlet and found “an unresponsive female in a ditch who appeared to have been stuck by a vehicle.” Despite life-saving attempts, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.   

As a result of their investigation, Smith resident Elman Morgan, 83, faces charges of impaired driving causing death, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and operation of a motor vehicle with blood-alcohol exceeding the legal limit.

RCMP report that Morgan was released from jail following a judicial interim release hearing and will appear in Slave Lake Provincial Court Jan. 25, 2023.
