The Alberta government's geospatial data, updated after the Aug. 27 data was released, showed a fifth case of COVID-19 in the Westlock area.

WESTLOCK — The Westlock area recorded its fifth case of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic last week.

This is currently the only active case in the area, according to Alberta Government's geospatial data. All of the other four cases, including one Town of Westlock employee, have recovered.

This is the third case recorded within the borders of Westlock County in August, after the first two were reported in March.

Doctors in Westlock have kickstarted a campaign to promote wearing masks in the community. While town councillors decided not to pass a face covering bylaw, the town is continuing to campaign for their use where social distancing is not possible.

As of Aug. 27, 2020 there are 1,185 active cases across the province, 544 of them located in Edmonton. Seven people are in intensive care units of the 44 total COVID-related hospitalizations. In total, 13,476 Albertans have contracted COVID, and 237 people have died.
