A Winnipeg hockey coach has been charged with over 15 offences stemming from a sexual relationship with a player between 2019-21.
A press release issued on Nov. 10 by the Winnipeg Police Service states that 28-year-old Madison Biluk, of Winnipeg, coached with the organization of Hockey Manitoba from 2018-23.
“The information obtained by investigators was that the accused forged an inappropriate sexual relationship by grooming and gaining the trust of the survivor,” the Winnipeg Police Service release states.
“The coach was in her 20s, and the survivor was in her teens. Although the offences began while the survivor was being coached by the accused, the coercion and abuse continued after she stopped playing hockey.”
During the 2021-22 season, Biluk was a coach with the Okotoks-based Rocky Mountain Raiders U18 AA team which plays in the Alberta Female Hockey League.
The AA and AAA teams in the community are under the operation of the Okotoks Oilers Athletic Association (OOAA).
The OOAA issued a statement on its website on Nov. 14 that is signed by OOAA president Dan Laplante and Okotoks Minor Hockey president Geoff Stewart. The statement reads:
“On November 10th, 2023, the Okotoks Oilers Athletic Association (“OOAA”) learned that the Winnipeg Police had charged Madison Biluk with a number of offences, including sexual assault, in connection with a player she coached in Manitoba from 2019-21.
“The OOAA is not aware of any complaints which are similar in nature to the charges brought against Ms. Biluk by the Winnipeg Police in connection with her coaching of the U18 AA Raiders team.
“As part of Hockey Alberta, the OOAA and OMHA are committed to fostering an environment that is safe for all participants. We support and encourage any individual who has experienced any type of mistreatment, sexual violence, harassment or bullying by someone affiliated with the OOAA or the OMHA to bring forward their concerns to the appropriate authority.
“In particular, we encourage any individual who may have concerns about their interactions with Ms. Biluk during her time with the OOAA to contact the Okotoks RCMP detachment.”
The Winnipeg Police charged Biluk with a host of offences, including sexual assault, sexual exploitation, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching, possession of child pornography, assault with a weapon and assault.
Winnipeg Police state she was released by way of Crown-authorized conditions, that the investigation is continuing and that anyone with information is asked to call the Sex Crimes Unit at 204-986-6245.
The WPS also acknowledged Hockey Winnipeg, Hockey Manitoba and Hockey Canada for their assistance, adding they are aware of the investigation.
