The Athabasca Healthcare Centre has created some buzz around town when equipment and materials were noticed outside the building last week. AHS says planned routine maintenance on the roof is ongoing and expected to be completed in April.

ATHABASCA - More than one person has noticed a lot of activity going on at the Athabasca Healthcare Centre in the last week, but no one seemed to know what was happening.

Town of Athabasca Coun. Ida Edwards even mentioned at the regular council meeting Jan. 19 she had noticed at a lot of material and equipment between the facility and neighbouring Canadian Tire, but was unaware where the work was taking place, as was the rest of council.

Diana Rinne, senior communications advisor for Alberta Health Services (AHS) North Zone clarified Thursday there is routine maintenance work being completed on the roof of the hospital, that will continue throughout April.

“On Jan. 11, the second phase of work began to replace the roof at the Athabasca Healthcare Centre,” said Rinne. “The approximately $1 million project will replace the aging roof, provide insulation to current standards, and proper slope for drainage. Funding for this project comes from the Government of Alberta’s Infrastructure Maintenance Program (IMP)."

She noted the work will not impact staff or public parking, nor access to the building.

“We apologize for not notifying the town, and we are happy to provide regular updates as well as share information on any future projects that may have a major impact on the exterior of the site,” she said. “Roof repairs are expected to be completed in late April 2021.”
