ATHABASCA — Food, litter, puppy pads, cleaning supplies, some kennels, or crates and for a bonus, some toys and treats.
Those a few of the things Athabasca County enforcement services, Athabasca County Fire Services and Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) are hoping generous animal lovers will donate at an upcoming event Dec. 21 (rescheduled from Dec. 17), or at the Athabasca County office until Jan. 7, 2022. Of course, cash donations are also welcome
“SCARS relies on donations to operate and so Athabasca County enforcement services as well as our fire departments for Athabasca County are going to be conducting the event at Buy Low Dec. 21 from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and we're going to be having a barbecue and taking donations for them,” explained community peace officer Kevin Rowan.
Even if the weather doesn’t cooperate, it will be moved inside, or shelters will be set up with three ways to donate, he said.
“People can make money donations if they’d like to or purchase something through the barbecue and we also have a list of items that are needed by SCARS,” he said. “We have that on our website and that will also be on one of our signs at the store.”
The rescue is particularly in need of canned puppy and kitten food, cat litter, adult cat and dog food, cleaning supplies, puppy training pads and kennels or crates. Any treats or toys are the cherry on top.
“If somebody wants to go into the store and purchase something we can definitely take that at that time as well,” said Rowan.
The CPO vehicle and/or a fire department vehicle will be on display during the event and Buy Low donates all the food to ensure the money goes to SCARS while Rowan and the firefighters put in some sweat equity to help the non-profit.
