ATHABASCA — While not limited to conspiracy theories surrounding COVID-19 and vaccinations, there is a lot of fake or pseudo-science being shared, particularly on social media as real science.

Dr. Farook Al-Shamali,is the academic coordinator for physics at Athabasca University (AU) and will be speaking about ‘The Reality of Fake Science’ as part of Science Outreach AU’s ongoing lecture series tonight, March 23, at 7 p.m. on Zoom.

“What is called pseudo-science or fake science or false information is being exchanged and especially right now with social media the issue is becoming a problem,” he said.

The goal is to educate people on how to discern the difference between actual peer-reviewed science and a conspiracy theory or misinformation using critical thinking and careful observation.

“I will also probably talk about the causes of why some people fall into these misconceptions and the difference between information and disinformation,” Al-Shamali said.
